From the recording Distance
When I first wrote this song, a friend e-mailed me: "Martha, I'm sorry! What happened?"
I think she thought something had gone wrong between me and my husband. NOT so, thankfully.
I haven't experienced love from the sad perspective of this song for a very long time. But believe me, I did, and too often, when I was a young woman. I still remember the aching loneliness.
I'm not sorry to remember the sad young woman I once was. I want to remember. Why? Because it is remembering one's own vulnerability and hurt that keeps the heart tender and sympathetic toward the hardships of others.
Lyrics
DISTANCE
I WATCH YOU FROM A DISTANCE
iN THE DISTANCE i STAND
WHEN YOU TURN YOU DON'T NOTICE
OR CARE WHO I AM
WHEN YOU SCAN YOUR SURROUNDINGS
YOUR EYES LOOK PAST ME
TO YOU I'M A FIXTURE
JUST A PART OF THE SCENE
CHORUS
FROM A DISTANCE I FOLLOW
wHERE YOU WALK ON THIS EARTH
lIKE YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL
I'M UNSEEN AND UNHEARD
ALL i WANT IS TO LOVE YOU
I'M A FOOL WITH A DREAM
I LOVE YOU FROM A DISTANCE
TELL ME WHY, YOU DON'T CHOOSE ME
YOU'VE GOT LOVERS AND FRIENDS
SOMEONE'S ALWAYS WITH YOU
I'M ALONE IN THE DISTANCE
THE GIRL YOU DON'T CHOOSE
SO I LOVE YOU IN SECRET
WITHOUT ANY HOPE
THAT YOU'LL EVER LOVE ME
OR YOU EVEN WILL KNOW
CHORUS
