From the recording Arles
Arles is a small town in southern France. Of all the places Bob and I went in France, I'd have to say that Arles seemed, to me, the most exotic and foreign. There is a large gypsy presence there, and apparently has been for many years: Van Gogh, who spent his last and most productive years in Arles, painted gypsy caravans in Arles.
I was reading some of Van Gogh's letters the other day. In describing Arles, he used the words 'exotic and foreign' so his impression of Arles must have been quite similar to mine.
Arles also has some spectacular Roman ruins and I felt the weight of many generations' history in Arles. This photo is of the Roman Coliseum where bull fights are still staged.
